Tasting Notes
Produced from 20-35 year old vines from chalky limestone, clay and marlstone soil. Aged in barrel (10% new oak) for 10 months with some stirred lees, the wine is then racked and assembled in neutral oak for an additional 5-6 months before bottling. The nose shows floral notes with some citrus and hazelnut aromas. Fairly rich in the mouth, it is persistent with good acid and nice tension. - Importer Note
Founded in 1869, this family-run estate, like most during that time, was originally structured on a poly-culture model; vines, grain and livestock. It gradually evolved to producing only grapes and wine over the last 50 years and is now run by Jean-Marie (father) and Damien (son) Courbet. The estate now comprises of 7.5 hectares of vineyards. Half are located on the slopes directly below the famous village of Château-Chalon which is arguably the greatest appellation of the region. The balance of the vineyards are located nearby in the communes of Domblans and Menétru. Not only the geographical location of the vines, but also the sublime skill of the Domaine’s winemakers, passed down over numerous generations, has led to the historical quality of Domaine Courbet.
Since 2005, the Courbets have been farming biodynamically and the estate is currently in transition to organic certification. All harvests are manual and only indigenous yeasts are used. Minimal use of sulphur dioxide is used in their winemaking process. - Importer Note
