Tasting Notes

This is a proper smashable red from Saumur-Champigny, all about fresh, tangy fruit and pure drinkability. It's Cabernet Franc off practising organic vineyards on the region's classic clay-limestone, tufa and green sand soils, fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel with a deliberately short maceration to keep all that juicy fruit intact, then aged in tank for five months.

Expect tangy raspberry and blackcurrant with loads of freshness, a spicy, gluggable red that's brilliant with a bit of a chill alongside charcuterie, grilled chicken or a nice piece of red meat. Drink it young over the next year or three and don't be afraid to pop it in the fridge for half an hour first. - Pete L

Domaine des Sables Verts is the project of Caroline Meurée and Hervé Malinge, a young winemaking couple who took over the estate in 2019. Based in Varrains, in the heart of Saumur-Champigny, they farm around 16 hectares spread across more than 30 individual parcels, predominantly planted to Cabernet Franc with a small amount of Chenin Blanc.

The vineyards sit on the limestone and tuffeau soils that define this part of the Loire, including prized parcels in Les Poyeux, Chaintres and Les Rouères. Farming is organic, while the cellar work is deliberately restrained, with spontaneous fermentations and élevage across tanks, barrels, foudres and clay jars depending on the site. Their approach is increasingly parcel-focused, producing precise, classical Saumur with beautiful freshness, fine structure and a strong sense of place.
