Tasting Notes
1988 Monbazillac at this price... need I say more? A sensational wine from an outstanding vintage. Dessert wines don't get much better than this. - Chris L
Domaine Theulet-Marsalet is a historic, family-run winery located in Monbazillac, within the Bergerac wine region of Southwest France. The Alard family has operated the estate since at least 1848, focusing on traditional methods and precision in crafting classic sweet wines from the Monbazillac appellation.
The grapes for their Monbazillac wines are sourced from vineyards within the appellation, a region known for specific conditions that favor the development of Botrytis cinerea (noble rot), which is essential for these sweet wines. The wines are primarily made from a blend of Sémillon and Muscadelle grapes. The winemaking approach is focused on producing balanced, rich, and complex sweet wines with a remarkable capacity for aging.
The flagship wine is the Domaine Theulet-Marsalet Monbazillac, known for its lush layers of candied apricot, honeycomb, orange marmalade, and toasted almond. These wines are often considered age-worthy and can develop for decades. The domaine has also historically produced other wines from the Bergerac region.
