Tasting Notes
Via Nuova was the name of a small vineyard located near the town of Barolo. Its name came from its proximity to the road (new, in the last century) that connected Barolo to Novello. Today, only a path through the vineyards remains of that road, which can be traveled on foot. For years it was vinified in purity until the Municipality of Barolo, reorganizing the Additional Geographical Mentions (which came into force in 2010) decided to incorporate it into a larger sub-zone, distinguished by the name Terlo. With the suppression of this very small Cru, in homage to the tradition of the Assembly, we began to vinify the Barolo Via Nuova with the grapes of Terlo and Liste, from the Municipality of Barolo; Gabutti and Baudana from the Municipality of Serralunga d'Alba; Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi from the Municipality of Monforte d'Alba. - Winery Note
The 2020 Barolo Via Nuova is stellar. It clearly benefits from a blend of several sites. Dark cherry, gravel, spice, menthol, Iicorice and dried herbs all build in this potent, structured Barolo. As always, the blend includes Paiagallo, Liste, Terlo, Gabutti, Baudana, Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi - an approach that works so well. This is a stellar showing from Chiara Boschis. 96 points, Antonio Galloni - Vinous
The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Via Nuova opens to a little more dark fruit and ripe berry in this vintage. The wine is buttoned up from all sides into a tight little package of aromas. You get orange peel, bright cherry and a fragrant springtime fruit blossom. There are hints of herb, tar, violet and chalky mineral. The tannins are finely polished and smooth. 95 points, Monica Larner - Wine Advocate
The Boschis family purchased E. Pira & Figli in 1981, propelling the young Chiara into a role significantly different to that intended by her economics degree. The family was, until recently, proprietors of Barolo's historic Giacomo Borgogno estate (Chiara originally learnt her wine-making skills from her brothers) but she brought her considerable determination, charm, patience and confidence to bear on raising the quality and image of Pira to that which it enjoys today. Her philosophy is to craft wines that marry the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability, promoting great aromatics, lush textures and elegance. This has been achieved through strict vineyard management, careful selection and impeccable vinification techniques. Beginning as one of only two female oenologists working in Barolo, Chiara is nowadays regarded as every bit the equal of her peers.
Chiara has recently been joined by her brother Giorgio, and the two have expanded their Barolo vineyards to now include Mosconi and Ravera in Monforte and Gabutti in Serralunga.
