Tasting Notes

A light bodied Schiava from the northern reaches of Italy in the Alto Adige region (aka Dolomites). A breezy 13% alc. delivers a wine bright in red fruits and delicately herbal to keep things interesting. Crunchy, fresh and lip-smacking. Great value. - Chris L

Erste + Neue is a distinguished cooperative winery located in Kaltern (Caldaro), in Italy’s Alto Adige (South Tyrol) region. Established in 1986 through the merger of two historic local cooperatives founded in 1900 and 1925, it later became part of the broader Cantina Kaltern network in 2016 while preserving its original name and identity.

Spanning some 235 hectares of vineyards, the cooperative sources fruit from steep, terraced sites that rise from the temperate shores of Lake Caldaro to the cooler, sun-drenched slopes of the surrounding Alps. The combination of high altitude, diverse soils, and cool nights gives the wines distinctive freshness and natural vibrancy.

Erste + Neue crafts a broad yet consistently quality-driven portfolio, organized into three tiers: Basic, Classic, and the premium Puntay line. Their range includes hallmark Alto Adige varieties—from Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc to native reds like Schiava (Vernatsch), Lagrein, and Pinot Nero—each expressing clarity, precision, and a strong sense of place.

With a commitment to both tradition and innovation, Erste + Neue remains a benchmark for premium Alpine wines: inviting, articulate, and rooted in the region’s dual heritage of heritage cooperativism and mountain finesse.
