Tasting Notes
From our original 1988 plantings, this Cabernet Sauvignon has excellent regional characters of ironstone minerality combined with the great fruit weight of the variety. Delicious drinking now or can be cellared for the medium term. - Producer Note
Frankland Estate is one of the leading family-owned wineries in Western Australia’s remote Frankland River region, about 250 km inland from the coast. Established in 1988 by Judi Cullam and Barrie Smith, the estate has always focused on wines of purity and precision that reflect this cool, isolated corner of the Great Southern. Today the second generation, Hunter and Elizabeth Smith, continue the family’s commitment to thoughtful farming and terroir-driven winemaking.
The vineyards are farmed organically and sit on ancient ironstone and gravelly loam soils, with cool nights and a long ripening season that give fruit exceptional intensity and balance. Riesling is the flagship variety, with the Isolation Ridge vineyard producing some of Australia’s most celebrated examples – crystalline, dry and built to age. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon also thrive here, alongside Chardonnay and other aromatic whites, all crafted with an emphasis on elegance over power.
In the cellar, the approach is minimal and respectful: natural ferments, restrained use of oak, and careful handling to preserve freshness and site character. The result is a range of wines that consistently marry vibrant fruit with a savoury, textural edge, making Frankland Estate a benchmark not only for Frankland River but for Western Australia as a whole.
