Tasting Notes
We got to try the whole Fritz Haag range recently and I kept coming back to this wine because it sits in this sweet spot between the classic Mosel ripe rounded fruit characters supported by fruit sweetness and this clear zippy minerality/acidity that cuts straight down the centre of the palate and adds so much definition to the wine. I was just so impressed by this wine... Yes it's the entry level to a very good suite of Mosel Riesling but the common thread that defined all those top wines was still present in this wine and just as defined. We are seeing more and more people heading to these styles of Riesling from Germany and if you've not tried one you really should join the trend! - Pete L
Fritz Haag is one of Mosel’s most venerable Riesling estates, with a documented history stretching back to 1605 in the village of Dusemond—renamed Brauneberg in 1925 to honour the world-renowned Juffer vineyards. The estate remains family-run, now under Oliver Haag, who returned after training at Geisenheim and with vintages at top German estates. His father, Wilhelm Haag, led the estate from 1957 and established its reputation for finesse, purity and terroir expression in Mosel Riesling.
Covering close to 20 hectares planted solely to Riesling, Fritz Haag’s holdings include the celebrated Brauneberger Juffer and Juffer-Sonnenuhr vineyards. These steep, slate-rich slopes deliver wines of exceptional concentration, minerality and longevity, with the Juffer-Sonnenuhr in particular renowned for producing some of the Mosel’s most age-worthy wines.
In the vineyard, the focus is on sustainable farming and careful hand selection at harvest. In the cellar, fermentations take place in a mix of stainless steel and old oak, preserving freshness while allowing the distinct slate character of the sites to shine through.
Today, Fritz Haag remains a benchmark for Mosel Riesling, crafting wines that balance crystalline acidity, racy minerality and both youthful appeal and timeless ageing potential across styles from dry to lusciously sweet.
