Tasting Notes

Organically and biodynamically farmed Shiraz from McLaren Vale doesn't get much better value than this. Good density, polished red fruits and pepper spice. Unbelieveable value here and one of my favourite finds for an everyday, full-bodied quaffer. - Chris L

Gemtree is a family-run winery in McLaren Vale, established by Mike and Melissa Brown with a clear focus on sustainability and respect for the land. Today the estate farms over 300 acres of certified organic and biodynamic vineyards, making it one of the region’s leaders in regenerative viticulture. A strong belief in biodiversity underpins their approach—sheep graze between the vines, native trees are planted to encourage wildlife, and chemical inputs are avoided to maintain living soils.

The estate’s vineyards, spread across a range of McLaren Vale’s diverse soils from red clay to sandy loam, are planted mainly to Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Mediterranean varieties such as Tempranillo, Fiano and Vermentino that thrive in the warm, coastal climate.

Winemaking is deliberately minimal, with wild ferments, gentle handling and sensitive use of oak, allowing the fruit’s natural purity and the vineyard’s character to shine. The wines are known for their vibrancy, balance and drinkability, reflecting both McLaren Vale’s generosity and Gemtree’s thoughtful, eco-driven ethos.

Gemtree has become a benchmark for sustainable Australian wine, producing bottles that are expressive, authentic and rooted in a deep respect for nature.
