Tasting Notes
Grown high up in the Central Ranges, between 320 and 520 metres on soils laced with weathered basalt and decaying granite, this is a red made for perfume and freshness. Hand picked in the cool of the morning and split across a stack of parcels, around a fifth went through whole bunch carbonic maceration with the rest fermented as whole berries, everything handled gently with wild yeasts, long slow extraction and a basket press before heading into stainless and neutral oak. Malo and a good year resting on lees round it all out.
The result is aromatic and detailed, with a long palate and a real mineral edge, a thoughtful, low-intervention red that drinks beautifully. - Pete L
Gilbert Family Wines began its journey in 2004 by fifth generation winemaker Simon Gilbert. Simon has always had a strong desire to do things his own way and create a label true to himself, at the same time paying tribute to his heritage. The winery and cellar door is based in Mudgee (NSW), with grapess being sourced from Mudgee, Orange, Hilltops and Tumbarumba. Will Gilbert (Simon's son) is now at the helm and the wines have never looked better. Will has gained experience in Burgundy under Benjamin Leroux and you can see this influence in his Pinot Noir's and Chardonnay's, the wines he holds in highest regard. - Winery Note
