Tasting Notes
If you're after dry Riesling this is not the wine for you... but perhaps it will be soon, because it is absolutely delicious. A harmonious balance between sweetness and acidity that any Riesling producer strives for. It leaves your palate refreshed and not cloing or sick from the sugar. I'd drink it with some beer battered fish and chips. Moreish. - Chris L
Helm Wines is one of the pioneering producers of the Canberra District, founded in 1973 by Ken and Judith Helm at Murrumbateman, just north of Canberra. The estate helped establish the region’s reputation for cool-climate Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, and remains family-run with a deep commitment to expressing regional identity through meticulous viticulture and restrained winemaking.
The vineyards sit on decomposed granite soils at elevations around 600 metres, providing excellent drainage and diurnal variation—ideal conditions for aromatic white wines and elegant reds. Riesling is the hallmark variety, crafted in a range of dry and off-dry styles that showcase purity, precision and ageing potential. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz also feature prominently, shaped by the same philosophy of balance and site expression.
In the cellar, Helm’s approach is guided by minimal intervention and clarity of fruit. Fermentations are cool and slow, oak is used sparingly, and every detail aims to preserve the natural brightness and structure of the fruit. Today, Ken Helm is widely regarded as one of Australia’s foremost Riesling specialists, with his wines regularly ranking among the country’s most consistent and cellar-worthy examples.
