Tasting Notes
There is so much energy in this wine. This is a single parcel of grenache, high in the hills behind the village and the wine is fermented in tank (semi-carbonic) for nearly a month before going to barrel. Bottling took place after roughly 8 months. This cuvee is such a fine and delicious example of what can be produced in a very hot, very dry area if the soils are fitting. Lots and lots of flavour, yet with a distinct sense of almost weightlessness. Unmissable. - Importer Note
It gives me so much pleasure to talk about the soils that these wines come from, such is the extraordinary freshness and digestibilty that the schist gives, and we've seen this in abundance over the last seven days. As many of you know, Jose's journey to this point has been incredibly diverse and interesting. He has lived all over Europe, among other things working in the construction of eco-buildings, and speaks several languages. A visit to Banyuls to play music in 2010 was the very beginning of his journey in to wine and it was his new friend Manuel di Vecchi Staraz from shining domaine Vinyer de la Ruca who eventually convinced him to return to the village for good and start making wine. His friends at Les 9 Caves found a vineyard for him to buy and he made his first wines in the 2014 vintage. Jose works in a calm, considered manner and has a deep passion for the environment and making healthy, fluid wines. He picks fruit with levity and freshness in mind and the resultant wines have just so much flavour - added to, of course, by the fact that yields here average around 7 hectoliters - an almost impossibly unsustainable level by anyone's reckoning. All of this means that the work in Banyuls is simply very hard, yet the rewards, in terms of fruit quality, can be completely breathtaking. - Importer Note
