Tasting Notes
Probably the most interesting rose I've come across from Australia in a very long time, and about as far from the pale, fresh Provence template as rose can get. It's 100% Shiraz off 36 year old vines at Clarendon in McLaren Vale, barrel fermented and given a good while in wood, with a tiny splash blended in from a perpetual reserve that's been building since 2021 under a veil of flor yeast, the same oxidative trick that lends a wine like Clos Cibonne its depth. The result has genuine power, structure and intensity, with chalky mineral edges that take me straight to the more serious end of Coteaux Champenois. There's a mass of red fruit and layered red flowers, a little flicker of Shiraz spice, but it's the savoury depth and complexity underneath that really sets it apart. This is no simple rosé, it's vinous, complete and genuinely built to age. - Pete L
