Tasting Notes
If I had to say Mac had a favourite site it would be Woori Yallock... When I spent time at his vineyards a few years back I got the impression it was the site he adored the most. It tends to produce the style of wine that I feel Mac loves, graceful, light on its feet yet packed full of detail. Silk wrapped red fruits, lifted acidity that adds to the overall lightness/freshness of the wine. Definitely decant and let it unfurl. - Pete L
Mac Forbes is a benchmark winery in Victoria’s Yarra Valley and beyond, founded in the early 2000s and now led by Mac Forbes himself in partnership with winemaker Josh Myers. The estate’s philosophy revolves around minimal intervention and letting vineyard identity shine: fruit is sourced from diverse cool climate sites—including Yarra Valley, Macedon, Heathcote and Geelong—and always handled gently in the cellar.
Mac focuses especially on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling, as well as explorations into varieties like Nebbiolo and Gamay. The viticulture is sustainable and precise, with emphasis on low yields, canopy management, and selecting sites where structure, tension and energy can emerge naturally. In the winery, fermentations are primarily native, extractions are soft, and maturation tends to favor neutral oak and long lees ageing—all to preserve freshness over overt oak character.
The resulting wines are celebrated for their clarity, poise and longevity, combining intellectual purity with emotional resonance. Mac Forbes has earned acclaim as a leading voice in Australian cool climate wine, consistently producing bottles that balance immediacy and age-worthiness while letting place speak above all else.
