Tasting Notes
Made from organically grown Aladasturi in western Georgia’s Samegrelo region, this rosé offers a vivid expression of the grape’s natural delicacy and perfume. The nose opens with wild strawberry, pomegranate and redcurrant, lifted by hints of rose petal, spice and crushed herbs. On the palate, it is bright and textural, with juicy red fruit balanced by fine acidity and a subtle tannic grip from brief skin contact. The finish is dry, savoury and mineral, echoing with notes of citrus zest and mountain herbs. A refreshing, characterful rosé that speaks of its place and the authenticity of qvevri-based winemaking. - Chris L
Martvili’s Marani is a small, family-run winery based in the village of Martvili in Georgia’s western Samegrelo region. Founded by Zurab and Nino Gagua, the estate has become one of the key voices in reviving traditional Megrelian winemaking, combining ancient methods with a deep respect for the region’s native grape varieties and natural environment. The name Marani means “cellar” in Georgian, a nod to the clay qvevri vessels that remain central to their craft.
The Gagua family farms organically, cultivating indigenous varieties such as Tsolikouri, Ojaleshi, and Aladasturi on the region’s humid, rolling hills and sandy loam soils. All wines are made with minimal intervention—spontaneous fermentation using native yeasts, extended skin contact for whites and rosés, and no additives or filtration. The use of qvevri for both fermentation and ageing imparts texture, freshness and a gentle oxidative complexity that defines the house style.
Martvili’s Marani produces wines that are pure, expressive and deeply tied to place—wines that speak of western Georgia’s lush landscape and centuries-old winemaking traditions. They are both soulful and precise, reflecting the balance between heritage and the growing sophistication of modern Georgian natural wine.
