Tasting Notes

From western Georgia’s Samegrelo region, this skin-contact Tsolikouri shows a glowing amber hue and a nose of dried apricot, quince, orange peel and chamomile, lifted by spice and a gentle nutty edge. The palate is textural and expressive, with layers of stone fruit, citrus and herbal tea notes carried by lively acidity and fine tannins from extended skin maceration. Savoury and persistent, it finishes with a mineral grip and a touch of honeyed depth, offering both freshness and complexity. - Chris L

Martvili’s Marani is a small, family-run winery based in the village of Martvili in Georgia’s western Samegrelo region. Founded by Zurab and Nino Gagua, the estate has become one of the key voices in reviving traditional Megrelian winemaking, combining ancient methods with a deep respect for the region’s native grape varieties and natural environment. The name Marani means “cellar” in Georgian, a nod to the clay qvevri vessels that remain central to their craft.

The Gagua family farms organically, cultivating indigenous varieties such as Tsolikouri, Ojaleshi, and Aladasturi on the region’s humid, rolling hills and sandy loam soils. All wines are made with minimal intervention—spontaneous fermentation using native yeasts, extended skin contact for whites and rosés, and no additives or filtration. The use of qvevri for both fermentation and ageing imparts texture, freshness and a gentle oxidative complexity that defines the house style.

Martvili’s Marani produces wines that are pure, expressive and deeply tied to place—wines that speak of western Georgia’s lush landscape and centuries-old winemaking traditions. They are both soulful and precise, reflecting the balance between heritage and the growing sophistication of modern Georgian natural wine.
