Tasting Notes
A pure bright deep red, truly stunning. Clear and limpid, the shifting colour nuances often vary, though generally tending towards fairly dark shades of garnet or violet-purple: a colour that holds the eye.
With age, the palette tends towards pepper and musk, animal pelts, leather and spices, prunes. Sometimes the bouquet hints at scents of woodland undergrowth, moss, mushrooms, damp earth, game, fruit preserved in alcohol and mulberries round off this range of aromas. Especially in young wines, one may well encounter scents of pine, dog roses, violets and fresh cherries.
Peaceful and dreamy, serene with age, subtle and refined, this wine fully reveals the complex nature of a really good Burgundy, all the art that can be achieved through the medium of pinot noir grapes grown on one particular terroir. The structure is outstanding: solid, full-bodied, rich and exceptionally harmonious. It is wholly appropriate for the qualification Great to precede Echezeaux in the name Grands-Echezeaux: it has that extra touch of class, of vinosity, and a dense and subtle texture. - Winery Note
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret is a prominent and historic Burgundy estate based in Vosne-Romanée, with family roots in the region stretching back to 1620. Unusually for Burgundy, the domaine owns an expansive 30 hectares of vineyards spread across an impressive 35 different appellations in the Côte de Nuits and beyond, from regional AOCs to some of Burgundy's most coveted Grand Crus. These diverse holdings feature primarily Pinot Noir vines with an average age exceeding 40 years, planted on ideal mid-slope, clay-limestone soils, providing the foundation for concentrated and complex wines.
The winery's approach, guided by Vincent and Alexandre Mongeard, emphasizes sustainable viticulture and rigorous selection in the vineyard. Grapes are typically destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts after a cold maceration, and aged for up to two years in oak barrels that are carefully managed in-house. The amount of new French oak used increases with the wine's classification, ranging from 25% for village wines to nearly 100% for top Grand Crus, a key element in defining their signature style.
The resulting wines are characterized by a powerful, rich, and concentrated profile that is built to age. While approachable in their youth, they are known for their structure and depth, developing complex secondary aromas of earth, mushroom, and spice over time. The domaine’s most iconic and sought-after bottles include significant holdings in the Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux Grand Crus, which are highly prized by collectors worldwide.
