Tasting Notes
This is one hell of a cool wine! If you haven't had the opportunity to try an Orange wine than this is the perfect place to start - top of the food chain! It's 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Austria's Styria region. Of all the Muster orange wine this is the most pretty and perfumed, yet still structured on the palate where it cries out for food. This is such good wine and definitely a producer at the top of the natural wine tree. - Chris L
Sepp and Maria Muster took over Sepp's family estate in 2000 after spending time abroad in India and Australia where their fascination with biodynamic farming began. It was obvious to them that soil health is the key to growing the best quality grapes so they quickly converted their estate to biodynamic practices. An easier task than it would normally be as their vineyards had never been treated or sprayed with chemicals. They approach caring for their vines like caring about a friend, supporting them as best they can with the hope their "friends" reward them each year with the highly aromatic bounty of their vineyards.
They work with a mix of varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller, Morillon (the local clone of Chardonnay), Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch. All planted to the regions Opok soils, a mixture of limestone, clay and silt. The wines are aged in a variety of older barrels and amphora for at least 18 months, with some even being bottled in amphora like vessels too. They are detailed, aromatic, powerful, extremely long, contemplative wines that unfurl with air and time in the glass.
