Tasting Notes
Siccagno is my Nero d'Avola, born from that concentrated grape which is precisely called Siccagna. The Nero that tells so much about Sicily, which is wild, but also fresh and elegant, with a flavor of red fruits. Which has something noble and aristocratic, but also melancholy like a poet or a philosopher. Which is passionate, full of human warmth and contrasts. Classification DOC Sicily, the vineyard sits at an altitude of 280m above sea level and the ground is medium consistency from light sands and sub-Apennine rock of a calcareous nature. - Winery Note
Based in Vittoria, Sicily, Arianna has been making wines since she was 16, alongside her uncle, Giusto Occhipinti (the 'O' of COS wines). She released her first commercially available wine under her own Occhipinti label at the age of 22.
Since then she has gone from strength to strength, focusing on the two Sicilian varieties, Nero d’Avola and Frappato – though she does make white wine too.
Arianna farms organically and biodynamically, rejecting the use of chemical sprays and fertilizers, as well as taking a minimal intervention approach in the winery. Long macerations, no additions, neutral fermentation vessels and very limited use of sulphur, allow Arianna to express the purity of Vittoria through her elegant Nero d’Avola and Frappato wines. They are simply wonderful expressions of both grape and terroir.
