Tasting Notes

Sabbatiano or Savatino, they are both the same variety. This expression is concentrated and complex with layers of interest. Intense fruit sits among some more savoury aspects - mineral and lees contact. One of the most enjoyable Greek wines I've tried. - Chris L

Domaine Papagiannakos is a family winery rooted in the Plains of Mesogaia, Attica, just half an hour east of Athens. Founded in 1919, it is now in the hands of its third generation, under Vassilis Papagiannakos, who balances tradition and innovation while championing indigenous Greek varieties—especially Savatiano—as well as newer plantings like Malagouzia, Cabernet, Merlot and Agiorgitiko. Their vineyards are old-vines and leased plots across limestone and gravel soils with clay components, ungrafted in many cases, often dry-farmed, and benefiting from sea breezes and a warm Mediterranean climate tempered by altitude and northerly winds. In 2007 they built one of Greece’s first bioclimatic winery buildings, using gravity flow, energy-saving design, and sustainable practices, all intended to let the character of Attica’s terroir shine through. Papagiannakos wines are known for their freshness, clarity, and authenticity—wines that show identity, balance, and respect for place.
