Tasting Notes
Gaillard's Saint-Joseph comes from vineyards located in the communes of Chavanay, Malleval and Limony. The soils here haveplenty of granite - ranging from the sandy granites altérés to more rocky parcels - and individual vineyard parcels are keptseparate and are mostly destemmed before crushing. The final wine is then aged in Allier and Nevers barrels, only 10-20% new,for 18-20 months. Bottled unfiltered, this is a pretty, fragrant and sappy Syrah that offers aromas and flavours of dark cherry, raspberry, dark pepper and other warm spices. The palate is vibrant, punchy and spicy with crunchy freshness and a savoury, energetic close. It will certainly keep opening and gaining flesh as it recovers from its recent ocean voyage. Drink it over the next3-4 years, or forever hold your peace. - Importer Note
'Pierre Gaillard makes exciting, delicious wines in all three appellations. His St Joseph, in both white and red, is better than more prestigious ACs from less devoted, less artistic producers. Both cuvées of Côte-Rôtie are excellent, with lush, concentrated fruit and real freshness. " - Jacqueline Friedrich, The Wines of France.

Pierre Gaillard began his career working for both Vidal Fleury and Guigal before he struck out on his own in 1985. Since then, both his reputation and his vineyards have expanded, mainly in the St Joseph, Côte Rotie and Condrieu appellations, but now also Cornas and an estate in the south-west, Domaine de Madeloc, where Banyuls and Collioure are produced. Today, Gaillard is also part of the Vin de Vienne project with Francois Villard and Yves Cuilleron. He was a key member of the Guigal team in the 80's, helping create la Turque. As the review above by Jacqueline Freidrich shows, Gaillard is now reckoned in France to be among the Northern Rhone's best winemakers.
