Ross Hill is a family-owned winery in Orange, New South Wales, founded in 1994 by Peter and Terri Robson, now led by the next generation including James and Chrissy. Their vineyards stretch across multiple sites, most notably Griffin Road (750-850 metres elevation) and Wallace Lane (one of Australia’s highest planted cool-climate vineyards, over 1,000 metres), with soils that include basalt and volcanic origins, giving wines crisp structure and elevated freshness. Ross Hill was the first Australian winery certified carbon neutral under Climate Active, and sustainability sits at the heart of their farming and winemaking. They specialise in cool-climate varietals and styles—Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz—producing wines of precision, vibrant character and elegant refinement.
Tasting Notes
The Ross Hill Maya Chardonnay is a fine example of cool-climate Chardonnay from a certified carbon-neutral winery, located in the high-altitude Orange region of New South Wales. The fruit, sourced from vineyards at approximately 750–850 m elevation on basalt soils, is predominantly fermented in stainless steel, with a small percentage (around 10-18%) in older French oak, and aged on lees to build texture without adding overt oak flavor. This process results in a wine with a brilliant, pale straw color and an elegant nose of white peach, lemon zest, nectarine, and subtle nougat. The palate is medium-bodied and finely textured, offering vibrant rockmelon, citrus, and ripe apple flavors, complemented by a zesty acid framework and a clean, long finish with a delicate streak. - Chris L
