Tasting Notes
100% Gaglioppo from southern Italy's Campania region. Yep, never heard of that variety... but I'm into it! Fermented in concrete, it maintains its freshness and vibrancy of fruit with touches of spice. Mouth-watering deliciousness at a very fair price. - Chris L
Scala is a family estate in Calabria, established in 1949 and led today by Luigi Scala and his son Francesco, who aim to honour generations of vineyard tradition while embracing sustainable, organic practices. With about 18 hectares under vine in the Cirò DOC, they cultivate native varieties—Gaglioppo, Greco Bianco, Magliocco, Mantonico, Greco Nero—and train the vines in espalier over clay and sandy-soiled plains and hills. The property has been certified organic since 2016, and farming practices include the use of lupins for natural soil fertility, minimal intervention in the cellar, and native or restrained yeast use. Scala’s wines are celebrated for their purity, expression of place, and elegance rooted in Calabria’s sun, soil, and longstanding vine culture.
