Tasting Notes
From the traditional and pioneering producer, Gobelsburg, in the Kamptal region of Austria where Gruner Veltliner is at home. It's one of my favourite Gruner's for the money. Why? It's varietal and textural without compromising freshness, plus it's good value. - Chris L
Schloss Gobelsburg is one of Austria’s most historic and revered wine estates, boasting a winemaking legacy that dates back to its establishment by Cistercian monks in 1171. Located in the Kamptal region, the estate has been led by Michael Moosbrugger since 1996, who has successfully balanced the winery's deep monastic heritage with a forward-thinking approach to viticulture. As a leading member of the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (Association of Traditional Austrian Wine Estates), Gobelsburg is committed to expressing the unique character of its prestigious vineyard sites.
The estate’s vineyard philosophy centers on the diverse terroirs of the region, ranging from the volcanic desert sands of the legendary Ried Heiligenstein to the deep, wind-blown loess of the Danube terraces. Moosbrugger is a staunch advocate for sustainable farming and minimal intervention, ensuring that the fruit—primarily Grüner Veltliner and Riesling—reflects its specific origin. This focus on site-specificity allows them to produce wines that range from the fresh, accessible "Löss" bottlings to complex, age-worthy Single Vineyard (Ried) wines that are considered benchmarks of Austrian quality.
In the cellar, Schloss Gobelsburg is famous for its "Dynamic Cellar Concept" and the "Tradition" line, which pays homage to 19th-century winemaking techniques. By utilizing gravity-fed systems and large Austrian oak casks for maturation rather than modern stainless steel or new barriques, the estate produces wines with a distinctively silky texture and structural elegance. This dedication to historical methods and purity results in a house style defined by balance, mineral depth, and an exceptional ability to evolve beautifully over decades in the bottle.
