Tasting Notes
50% Whole Bunch Nero, showing cassis, blue fruit aromas, blackberry jubes and plenty of spicy licorice. It's bright and fresh and classically varietal in its flavours, with lovely shape and lifted raspberry coulis on the finish. A delicious light-to-medium bodied red that would suit a light chill, if you're so inclined. - Felix G
The wines are experimental, no intervention styles, where anything goes. But the results are undeniably delicious. Using fruit from throughout the Barossa and Eden Valleys, Matt creates fun and vibrant expressions of our very own backyard. These wines are brilliant additions to the tapestry of the Barossan wine scene, and well worth a look.
Songs From Mars is the Barossa project of rockstar Californian winemaker, Matthew Rorick. His label in the States, Forlorn Hope, has a cult following amongst the lo-fi, natural crowd. Matt likes to push the boundaries a little, and champion the forgotten parcels, the unknown varieties, the edgiest techniques.
It was on a trip to the Barossa to visit his friend Jaysen Collins (of Massena fame), that Matt came across a few spare parcels of old vine fruit. His winemaking fingers started to itch, and he couldn't help but try to express his experience of the Barossan landscape through the grapes. To him, it seemed like an alien patch of dirt, as far from his Californian home as possible. Songs From Mars was born.
