Tasting Notes
If the Northwest Grenache is the soprano, then the field blend block is the baritone—deeper in tone, with darker fruit, firmer tannins, and greater complexity, while still echoing Stonegarden’s signature rose-petal lift and spicy perfume. Planted in 1858, this block is predominantly Grenache, though a southern section originally planted to Mataro still contributes to the blend, along with other historical varieties—some intentional, others perhaps accidental—introduced when vine cuttings were first sourced in the 1850s. Over time, replantings have added further intrigue, and today the block is made up of over 85% Grenache, with Mataro, Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Trincadeira making up the rest. Together, they create a wine of layered depth, softer tannins, and darker fruit than its Northwest counterpart. A portion of whole bunches was included in the ferment, and ageing in seasoned 500L French oak barrels shaped the wine’s structure and style. - Aaron C
