Tasting Notes

The 2007 is the result of a very warm summer. On the nose, sensations of marmalade, dried quince and a hint of juniper. The palate is crisp and fresh with marmalade, spice and mandarin, the 264 grams per liter sugar carried wonderfully on the poised finish. - Importer Note

Two centuries ago, Tokaji was the most celebrated wine of Europe. It was drunk by the Tsar of Russia and Louis XIV of France. Between 1733 and 1798, the Tsars maintained a garrison of Cossacks on the country roads of Tokaji-Hegyalja, the region of northeastern Hungary in order to protect the wines safely back to St Petersburg; later, the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef sent Tokaji wines to Queen Victoria annually on her birthday. The Szepsy family has been making Tokaji Aszú wines since 1600s. Today, István Szepsy is the most highly regarded winemaker in the Tokaj region. The concept is simple: to produce the best possible grapes without any compromise, which later results in spectacular wines. The vineyards have high altitude, being on steep slopes, their soil is very stoney. The average age of the vines are 38 years. As Tokaj aszú wine has been produced since 1500s, the history of the family cannot be separated from it. The younger generations are proud of their ancestors and do their best going increasingly toward perfection. - Importer Note
