Tasting Notes

There's a real sense of place in this one. It's a field blend of Vermentino and a handful of local grapes off old terraced vineyards looking out over the Ligurian Sea, and you can certainly taste that maritime influence. The 2024 was picked across six separate passes, each parcel whole-bunch pressed, wild fermented and matured in oak before it all came together. The result is beautifully detailed, layered and textural with vibrant freshness and a distinctive salty tang running right through the finish. A characterful, seaside white that's an absolute joy to drink. Would be shockingly good with some sort of seafood tower or shellfish situation. - Pete L

Terre di Confine is the tiny project of winemaker and grower Giulia Marangon, established in 2020 in the dramatic hills of Candia dei Colli Apuani, right on the border between Tuscany and Liguria.

Giulia works around one hectare of old vineyards, with vines between 40 and 80 years old planted on steep, terraced slopes looking towards the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apuan Alps. The vineyards are mixed plantings, with Vermentino, Albarola, Moscato Giallo, Trebbiano Rosa and Malvasia for the whites, and Vermentino Nero, Syrah, Sangiovese, Bonamico and Barbarossa for the reds. Everything is worked by hand, without synthetic chemicals or irrigation, with a strong focus on restoring old, partly abandoned vineyards and preserving the biodiversity of this unique landscape.

In the cellar Giulia keeps things deliberately simple – spontaneous fermentation, no fining or filtration and little to no additions, with old oak, stainless steel and occasionally concrete used depending on the parcel. The different vineyards and varieties are vinified separately before being brought together, resulting in just two wines: the white Lincontro and red Lintero. Production is tiny, and the wines have a distinctly coastal feel – fresh, savoury and mineral, with plenty of character from these old vineyards wedged between the mountains and the Mediterranean.
