Tasting Notes

Co-planted rather than blended after the fact, which is a rarer way of going about things in Champagne. Pinot Noir takes 80% of the parcel with Chardonnay making up the rest, the two growing side by side on calcareous clay and sand, halfway up a northeast facing slope level with the village itself. The vines are 45 years old now. Picking them together the way they grow means the blend gets settled out in the vineyard rather than back in the cellar. - Pete L

Thomas Perseval is a respected, independent grower-producer in the Premier Cru village of Chamery in the Montagne de Reims, known for crafting pure, terroir-driven Champagnes using dedicated organic and biodynamic practices.

Thomas Perseval comes from a family with a long history of farming both cereals and vineyards in the heart of the Montagne de Reims natural park. His parents began bottling Champagne under their own name, Perseval-Harteel, in the early 1980s after leaving the local cooperative. Thomas took over the small 2.5-hectare estate in 2003, having been inspired by an internship with a biodynamic winemaker in Burgundy. He has since focused on converting the entire domain to a natural, respectful viticulture, achieving organic certification in 2012 and incorporating biodynamic principles.

The vineyards, spanning about 2.5 hectares across six plots, are primarily located in and around Chamery, an area with a variety of exposures and soils including sand, clay, and limestone. This diversity of micro-terroirs allows Thomas to produce single-vineyard wines that express the unique character of each plot. He also cultivates small quantities of rare, older native varieties like Petit Meslier, Arbane, and Pinot Blanc.
