Tasting Notes
We only receive a few cases of this each year since it's so highly sort after by the top retaurants and bars around the country. Made by Timo Mayer from a vineyard in the Upper Yarra near the Gembrook Hill. It's soils are granite like the name of the wine suggest and you can see this element of terroir shine through the wine. The profile is lean and taut... a fine boned Pinot Noir that requires a little time in the bottle to show its true Pinosity. I do like it though. - Chris L
One of the biggest characters in the Australian wine scene is German-born, Yarra-based, funk-bringer, Timo Mayer. His energy and charm, not to mention the quality of his wines, have brought this larger-than-life vigneron into the spotlight.
Timo comes from the school of thought that great wine is made in the vineyard. In this way, he describes himself as 'just a farmer.' But of course, he's a lot more than that. His method is one of minimal intervention, utilising whole bunch fermentation to truly express the character of the vineyards from which the fruit comes. Similarly, all of his wines are unfined and unfiltered, so as not to remove any flavour or texture from the finished products. The result is a collection of wines that display elegance and finesse, with layers of texture, complexity and balance. Oh, and they're absolutely delicious too.
