Tasting Notes
This is a perfumed, easy going red built around Syrah from the cooler Gembrook area in the Upper Yarra. Made with a mix of whole bunch and destemmed fruit, it’s fairly dark in the glass and really aromatic, with Syrah doing most of the talking. The palate leans juicy and slightly candied at the moment, so it’ll probably settle nicely with a bit of time. Think bright fruit, a bit of spice, and a lift of violet on the finish. Great served a little chilled as a summer red. - Pete L
One of the biggest characters in the Australian wine scene is German-born, Yarra-based, funk-bringer, Timo Mayer. His energy and charm, not to mention the quality of his wines, have brought this larger-than-life vigneron into the spotlight.
Timo comes from the school of thought that great wine is made in the vineyard. In this way, he describes himself as 'just a farmer.' But of course, he's a lot more than that. His method is one of minimal intervention, utilising whole bunch fermentation to truly express the character of the vineyards from which the fruit comes. Similarly, all of his wines are unfined and unfiltered, so as not to remove any flavour or texture from the finished products. The result is a collection of wines that display elegance and finesse, with layers of texture, complexity and balance. Oh, and they're absolutely delicious too.
