Tasting Notes
Lots of cherry and strawberry, with this really nostalgic autumnal character. Savoury undergrowth, forest floor, tree bark all come to mind in the best way. There is a slight hint of game/red meat to the wine, very fine tannin and bright almost pomegranate like acidity. - Pete L
One of the biggest characters in the Australian wine scene is German-born, Yarra-based, funk-bringer, Timo Mayer. His energy and charm, not to mention the quality of his wines, have brought this larger-than-life vigneron into the spotlight.
Timo comes from the school of thought that great wine is made in the vineyard. In this way, he describes himself as 'just a farmer.' But of course, he's a lot more than that. His method is one of minimal intervention, utilising whole bunch fermentation to truly express the character of the vineyards from which the fruit comes. Similarly, all of his wines are unfined and unfiltered, so as not to remove any flavour or texture from the finished products. The result is a collection of wines that display elegance and finesse, with layers of texture, complexity and balance. Oh, and they're absolutely delicious too.
