Tasting Notes

The Belford vineyard was planted in 1933. The soil is light and sandy – the consistency of talcum powder – for the top 50 centimetres. It is the northern-most of the Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley vineyards.

2018 was another strong Semillon vintage in the Hunter Valley. Dry, warm conditions that were similar to 2003 meant cropping levels were much smaller than average and produced wines with robust flavours and softer acids.

The grapes were handpicked and sorted in the vineyard. Once arriving at the winery, the fruit was very lightly crushed and pressed with a small percentage of stalks. After a relatively cool fermentation, the wine spent a minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.

Intensely lifted citrus notes, this wine has the robust, richer, almost chalky palate that is commonly associated with the Belford Vineyard that is balanced by a soft, clean acid profile, giving the wine its great length. - Pete L

Tyrrell’s is one of Australia’s most historic and celebrated wine estates, established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Still family-owned and operated, it is now run by the fifth generation, with Chris Tyrrell leading the estate into a new era while preserving its deep traditions.

The vineyards span some of the Hunter Valley’s most prized sites, including blocks of Semillon and Shiraz planted in the 19th century. The estate is especially renowned for its Semillon, considered a benchmark style worldwide for its purity, longevity and transformation with age. Shiraz, Chardonnay and other classic varieties are also central to the portfolio, crafted with a focus on freshness, elegance and regional character.

Tyrrell’s continues to champion sustainable viticulture and minimal-intervention winemaking, using hand harvesting, gentle handling and thoughtful oak to highlight the quality of fruit and vineyard expression. Their wines embody both heritage and modern precision, making Tyrrell’s a true icon of Australian wine.
