Tasting Notes
I love all the Unico Zelo wines but none more than this little bewdy! It's an orange wine so the juice spends a reasonable amount of time in contact with the skins, giving it it's orange hue. It's also more aromatic and textural as a result of this skin contact too. The assortment of varieties used are very aromatic and tropical with a beautiful viscosity to them, which I think balances the other textural elements. Eccentric wine at a not so eccentric price. - Chris L
Unico Zelo is a young, dynamic winery founded in 2012 by Brendan and Laura Carter in the Adelaide Hills. With a background in viticulture, winemaking and design, the Carters set out to create wines that speak of Australia’s unique landscape while being sustainable, approachable, and full of personality.
Their focus is on Mediterranean varieties that thrive in Australia’s climate with minimal irrigation—such as Fiano, Nero d’Avola, Greco and Dolcetto—sourced from growers across South Australia, particularly the Clare Valley and Riverland. Farming is guided by respect for the land and sustainability, with an emphasis on working with varieties suited to dry-farming and heat resilience.
In the cellar, Unico Zelo take a light-touch approach: wild ferments, minimal intervention, and vessels like concrete and amphora that preserve freshness and texture. The result is wines that are bright, textural and immediately drinkable, while still offering depth and detail.
Unico Zelo has quickly earned a reputation as one of Australia’s most exciting new-wave producers, balancing innovation with authenticity and delivering wines that are vibrant, adventurous and distinctly Australian.
