Tasting Notes
Established in 1849 in Deidesheim, in Germany’s Pfalz region, von Winning is one of the domain’s most storied estates. Originally founded by the Deinhard family, it came under the stewardship of Leopold von Winning in the early 20th century—a period that marked its ascent into Germany’s quality wine elite and a founding role in the VDP.
A modern resurgence began in 2007 under new ownership, as winemaker Stephan Attmann introduced renewed focus on terroir and traditional methods. The estate now farms around 40–80 hectares—most planted to Riesling—encompassing some of Pfalz’s finest sites, including Grosses Gewächs parcels like Kirchenstück, Pechstein, Jesuitengarten, Kalkofen, Kieselberg, and Langenmorgen.
Vineyard practices are sustainably oriented and increasingly biodynamic, with high-density plantings, rigorous site selection, and minimal intervention. In the cellar, the estate embraces native yeast fermentations in large oak barrels, extended lees aging, and scarcely any fining or filtration—letting purity and terroir take center stage.
Today, von Winning stands at the intersection of tradition and innovation—crafting dry Riesling and Pinot expressions marked by precise structure, mineral tension, and expressive depth that make it a benchmark for Pfalz excellence.
