2017 Release

 

Formed in 1958, Produttori del Barbaresco is a cooperative of 51 families of growers, spanning 250 acres under vine. Their sites cover nine crus within Barbaresco, and in the best years the wines are all released as individual bottlings, showcasing the diversity of the region. Each year they also produce a Barbaresco DOCG - a blend of the sites from all of the families - and a Langhe Nebbiolo.

The cooperative is led by Aldo Vacca, one of the most respected winemakers in the region. His father was part of the original cooperative formed in 1894, called Cantine Sociali.

The Produttori first began individual bottlings of their various sites in 1967, starting with 5 different crus. Around the same time their neighbours, Gaja and Bruno Giacosa began to release single vineyard bottlings as well, putting single site Barbaresco squarely on the map.

2017 brought along its challenges to the Barbaresco producers, with damaging hailstorms followed by a dry growing season. However, the vintage was blessed with some welcome rains just before harvest that saw a great diurnal temperature difference maintained throughout early September. This resulted in beautifully aromatic fruit with balanced acidity, and rich, structured wines.

Since its formation, Produttori del Barbaresco has been regarded as one of the top producers in Barbaresco; with each single vineyard family release telling a story of terroir and of vintage, they a worthy addition for any cellar.

Phil and Viv Snowden know that soils ain't soils. The geologist couple sold their mining consultancy company in 2004, wanting to find some new digs and take their geological knowledge to new heights. Inspired by the old-world wine their ex-pat daughter Pam and her imported husband Pat would bring home with them during visits from their then adopted home in Italy, Phil and Viv searched for a cool climate site to venture into the winemaking world.

They found their piece of paradise in Denmark. No, not that one. The Denmark that is a lonely/liberating 423km drive south-south-east of Perth. Paradise. With vines established on the site since 1986, the north-facing slopes on the rich, red karri loam soils provided great drainage to the ample Mediterranean-climate rain of the Wilson Inlet, and the giant karri trees themselves provided shelter. And just in case those rains were ever lacking, an established irrigation system was fed by a large dam on the property, a favourite swimming hole to the local geese.

Since then, the Snowden family today incorporate fruit from a number of sites across the Great Southern. Pam and Pat run the show, taking a minimal intervention approach to winemaking to really let that Denmark terroir shine through, and of course, soil health is of upmost importance to the family. The irrigation system linked to the dam hasn't been used in over a decade.

And Phil and Viv still watch on from their home in their Denmark piece of paradise, gandering at the resident gaggle that still walk in single file to that dam: the inspiration for the winery's name.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Maretti Langhe Nebbiolo 2018

One of the best value Nebbiolo's you'll ever come across. Lighter in body and weight than most, yet it maintains the varieties typical and very present tannin structure - fine and plentiful. It's more savoury and dusty than fruity and round, with aromas of raspberry, tar, leather and sweet spice. I'd serve it with pork or lamb. - Chris L
