André Clouet Champagne
Forget Moët, Veuve and all those other generic excuses for Champagne ...Clouet is leagues ahead without breaking the bank.
Christmas is rapidly approaching with less than a month until the day and the dreaded thoughts of buying Christmas gifts are starting to creep up. Fortunately, we've got it sorted for you with an absurd deal on André Clouet Champagne that we're running this Christmas so you can afford to buy a great bottle of Champagne for friends and family or bring a nice bottle to the Christmas lunch.
André Clouet is a great grower Champagne producer located in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy.
"During Creation, when God grew weary of sculpting the mountings, razing the deserts and firing up the volcanoes, he treated himself to a few moments of pleasure. He designed a little earthly paradise called Bouzy."
The exact origins of the Clouet family have been lost to time, although they have spent the past couple of centuries slowly building up their collection of vineyards and preserving the personality of their Champagne above all else. The André Clouet house specialise in Pinot Noir over Chardonnay or Meunier, and as such, produce Champagnes that have a slightly more succulent body with more generous fruit and are not as austere or sharp as some Chardonnay-dominant Champagne can be. These are much more ready to drink right as you pop the cork and complement just about any food.
We have both the 'Silver Brut Nature' and 'Grande Reserve' in stock at the moment which both represent ridiculous value for money. The 'Silver' is a 100% pure expression of Bouzy Pinot Noir without dosage and is blend of 65% base wine that spends 36 months on lees and 35% reserve wines that are 2-5 years old that have been stored in tank. The estate refers to this one as "fresh powder" due to it's powdery fine bubbles and glacial texture. The 'Grande Reserve' is also 100% Pinot Noir but sees a small dosage of 4.8-5.6g/L just to add some more succulence to the body and consists of a similar blend to the previous wine but with a 70/30 split instead. These are easily the best Champagnes on the market at this price and can easily hold their own against some that go for double the price. We are selling both the 'Silver Brut Nature' and 'Grande Reserve' for a flat price of $78.20 a bottle. We used to sell these wines in-store for $97 a bottle. This is an absolutely ridiculous deal that can't be passed up. As we are running these bottles at such a great price, they will not receive any further discounts that would usually apply to purchasing 6 bottles.
Don't wait until it's too late, get your Christmas shopping done early while we still have these in stock and save yourself the last minute stress!By Farr
The By Farr estate is located in Moorabool Valley, about halfway between Geelong and Ballarat - a region that they've become synonymous with and helped put in the spotlight of wine-lovers around the world. Gary and Robyn Farr purchased the original property in 1994, the second parcel in 1998 and finally the last parcel in 2011 comprising a total of 130 acres, of which 36 are dedicated to vines and the rest for grazing and cropping for the cattle and horses on the estate. Gary is one of the most significant figures in Australian wine, bringing his experience from Domain Dujac in Burgundy, Cristom in Oregon and Calera in California into his winemaking at home in the Geelong region. Gary still maintains a strong relationship with Domaine Dujac - one of Burgundy's greatest producers, making the pilgrimage to the estate practically every year for the past 2 decades and even having his son Nick work vintages there too. With such experience and passion for wine, it's easy to see how they make what legendary wine connoisseur Len Evans called “Australia’s best pinot”.
The microclimate of the Moorabool Valley is influenced by winds from the western plains and bracing sea breezes, which regulate the temperature on long, sunny days and cool the air overnight. This climate is key to producing naturally balanced, low-yield fruit that is rich in flavour. The farm receives only about 240mm of the 540mm yearly average of rainfall during the growing season and the temperature variation between night and day helps them to achieve complex, structured wines. There are six different soils spread across the Farr property, with the two main types being rich, friable red and black volcanic loam, and limestone, which dominates the loam in some areas. The other soils are quartz gravel through a red volcanic soil, ironstone (called buckshot) in grey sandy loam with a heavy clay base, sandstone base, and volcanic lava rock. The soil’s good drainage and low fertility are crucial in ensuring small yields of intensely flavoured fruit.
We've just received stock of the recent release of the estate's top bottlings and still have a bit of some of the others left over too. We have the '23 'By Farr GC Chardonnay' coming from a high-density vineyard on exposed north, northeast and east aspect and is considered to be one of the country's best Chardonnays. We also have some of their regular '23 'By Farr Chardonnay' bottling which is also exceptional from 30 year old vines on red soil over limestone. The top Pinots we got in are the '22 'By Farr RP Pinot Noir' and '22 'By Farr Tout Pres' - the former being sourced from the same site as the 'GC Chardonnay' and the latter coming from 3 different slopes of different soils and vinified with 100% whole bunches and 100% new oak. We also have some of the '23 'Viognier', '22 'Farrside Pinot', '21 and '22 'Sangreal Pinot' and a couple bottles left of the '22 'Shiraz'. This is one of Australia's greatest producers that have set a benchmark for top-tier Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.Pooley
The first vines were planted in Cooinda Vale, Coal River in 1985 by Denis and Margaret Pooley as nothing more than a retirement plan at first. This site has now come to be known as one of the greatest cool climate sites in Australia for Pinot Noir and Riesling. Pooley remains a family-run estate after all these years and even recently won the Halliday Wine Companion winery of the year for 2023.
Pooley's vineyards are located inland away from bodies of water which results in a much drier environment than the other wine regions of Tasmania and causes more extremes in temperature. Despite this continentality, there is still some influence from the Southern Ocean which causes some warm sunny days and cool dewy nights and a long growing season so the grapes can smoothly achieve optimal ripeness. The lower rainfall is helpful for reducing disease pressure.
"Having the most natural inputs from vine to wine ensures we are paying homage to terroir and all the stories of that vintage."
Pooley work with 2 main vineyards: the original Cooinda Vale vineyard planted in 1985, and the Butcher's Hill vineyard planted in 2003. Cooinda Vale is more continental and sheltered by the surrounding hills and sits at an elevation of 80-100m with NE aspect on shallow sandy clay loams over impervious clays, whereas Butcher's Hill is a steep north-facing slope between 30-100m altitude with black cracking clay and sandy loams with sandstone composite gravel from sandstone over heavy clay. Although not officially certified, Pooley also have a strong focus on biological farming and implement regenerative agricultural practices by dedicating permanent biodiversity zones on their sites to build back the landscape. Anna Pooley also handles everything gently with minimal intervention.
We've recently stocked up on the new release of the Cooinda Vale range and also have plenty of other Pooley wines as well. From the new Cooinda Vale release, we picked up the '23 'Cooinda Vale Riesling', '23 'Cooinda Vale Chardonnay' and the '23 'Cooinda Vale Pinot Noir'. These are all exceptional and represent some of the best expressions of their respective varieties coming out of Tasmania. The other Pooley whites that we have in stock are the '24 'Pinot Grigio', '24 'Gewurztraminer', '24 'Riesling', '22 'Margaret Pooley Tribute Riesling' and the '22 'Elizabeth Anne Chardonnay'. The other Pooley reds that we have are the '23 'Pinot Noir', '22 'Cooinda Vale Pinot Noir', '22 'Oronsay Cooinda Vale Pinot Noir', '22 'Oronsay Butchers Hill Pinot Noir' and the top '22 'Jack Dennis Pinot Noir'. These are some of the very best wines, not just in Tasmania, but in Australia - don't hesitate to pick some of these up whether you drink it yourself or gift it to a loved one this Christmas.Elanto Tasting
Saturday 30th
3pm-6pm
Join us this Saturday for a tasting of Mornington Peninsula's Elanto wines.
Elanto started as a venture between Sandro Mosele and Tony Todaro who met at a French wine tasting and instantly connected. They were both interested in working with a high-density vineyard with an easterly aspect and well-drained soils conducive to deep roots. They found this wonderful site in Balnarring with a southeast aspect and volcanic soils and with the help of French soil scientist - Claude Bourguignon, were convinced of the potential of this site to produce spectacular, distinctive wines.
Elanto only produce 2 wines which is what we'll be pouring this Saturday:
Elanto Chardonnay 2023
Elanto Pinot Noir 2023
I have already tasted these wines and I'm going to try and come in on my day off to taste them again. If you think it might not be "worth it" to come to a tasting with only 2 wines on pour, you'd be sorely mistaken. Don't miss out on the chance to try some of the best new wines out of the Mornington Peninsula!
Wishing you a great week from the team: Chris, Pete and Aaron.
