Aussie Alternatives
Tasting Saturday 2nd of March

3-6PM

Wow is it hot today! We planned this tasting not knowing how hot it would be here in Sydney but it makes the point a bit more obvious… Just like humans, certain grape varieties struggle in the Aussie climate and some other varieties love it. This week we focus on a selection of wines from new wave small Aussie producers who are embracing the more alternative side of wine.

These are the grapes that you don't see everyday, the more obscure, rare, and downright different grapes that are being grown here from around the world. We want to champion these styles because apart from being absolutely delicious, many of them are perfectly suited to our hot and dry climate here in Australia.

In fact, many alternative varieties from France, Spain, Portugal and Italy are being grown with great success across many Aussie wine regions. Grapes such as these are drought resistant and highly tolerant to heat which suit our increasingly warm climate. It's definitely the direction we should be moving in, and establishing our own unique vinous voice through these quirky styles. We are certainly seeing way more interest in these varieties in the shop so why not open some for a tasting? - Pete L

On tasting will be:

Alle Vare Moscato Giallo 2022 (Orange)

La Petite Vanguard Vermentino and Fernão Pires Iberion White 2023

Konpira Maru The Ballad Of Boggy Creek Arneis 2023

La Petite Vanguard Tinta Barocca Rose 2023

Smallfry Pimpernel Trousseau 2023

Domenica

2021 Nebbiolo Release

Peter Graham is a respected member of a group known as the Beechworth Vignerons. Like the other proud and passionate vigneron members of the North East Victorian group, the wines he makes come from fruit harvested from the vines he tends himself. And with 13 years working as assistant winemaker under fellow Beechworth Vigneron, Rick Kinzbrunner of the famed Giaconda, there is no mistaking where his passion for the GI and the respect he has earnt as a winemaker both come from.

Peter flew the Giaconda coop in 2012 with an opportunity arising to buy the project vineyard shared by Rick and Rhône Royalty, Michel Chapoutier. Since then, Peter has been tending his vines on the slopes of the foothills of Victoria's high county, including of course, Beechworth's golden varietals, Chardonnay and Shiraz. His Rhône white varietals Roussanne and Marsanne thrive on the gentle slopes with their northern aspect and take a mineral drive from their granitic soils. Patient vinification with extended lees ageing results in his whites and rosé all showing off voluptuous texture.

But it is his Nebbiolo, the rising star varietal of the region, that really is the showstopper. From a single acre grown on shale in a protected southerly pocket of the vineyard, patient winemaking is again key with maturation softening those infamous tannins for a couple of years before release. Yields are kept low with Peter reminding us that "taste is more important than numbers".

However with bottle numbers being extremely limited, we urge you to get in quickly!

Mixed 6er Packs

If you missed our Tuesday email this week you might not know that we are doing packs! Yes, they are back. Some of you may remember the packs from the old website (Veno) and know how this works and why they are a great option. For those that don't here's the idea and why we think they are one of the best ways to shop with us.

We are constantly receiving deliveries of new wines, new vintages or top ups of our favourites and these packs are the best way for us to share those with you, especially if you can't make it to the store. One of the best parts of our job is tasting and selecting new wines that make it on to the shelves but the even better part is getting to share those bottles with you and by grabbing a pack you get to join the journey.

The idea is simple, first you pick what you would like to spend from the four available options:

Mixed 6er Pack #1 - $199

Mixed 6er Pack #2 - $249

Mixed 6er Pack #3 - $299

Mixed 6er Pack #4 - $349

Once that's covered you can either leave the selection entirely up to us or in the order comments specify whatever you'd like to receive from styles, to regions, varieties or even the occasion for example "I want wines perfect for a party" and we will curate a selection of wines that we think will tick all the boxes.

It is a great way for you to try new and exciting styles of wine but also a great deal. You are placing your trust in us to select exciting wines for you and as a reward we get to be a bit more generous with the discount so the packs are also great value. We are looking forward to being able to share our selections with you. - Pete L
