Elise Dechannes

The Champagnes of Elise Dechannes are some of the most sought-after in the region of Aube, where she is based in the sub-region of Les Riceys and produces some truly unique expressions of Pinot Noir. Elise started nurturing her vines in 2008 after leaving a successful career in banking as a Reims Business School graduate to pursue more soulful work. After 17 years, she has decided to close her petite domaine and move on to other things as she has done everything she wanted to with her winemaking. She will no longer be producing any more Champagne and the wine she does still have in the cave will most likely see a big price jump as she clears out.

Being intimately connected since childhood to the world of viticulture into which she was born, Elise is fully aware of her responsibilities as the custodian of the precious terroir under her charge. She uses organic (certified in 2018) and biodynamic practices and in some years she doesn’t apply any copper or sulfur to the vines. For Elise, producing an excellent champagne goes hand in hand with respecting both humankind and the nourishing earth. From the very start, she has been implementing production methods that aim for quality and exacting ethics such keeping vine treatments to a minimum, weeding manually, respecting her staff and harvesting meticulously and selectively. Much like the nearby region of Chablis, her soils are generally composed of Kimmeridgian marl and clay. Vinifications and aging are conducted stainless steel, oak, sandstone and clay amphorae and most Champagnes are bottled without dosage. The resulting wines are stunningly pure, effervescent, detailed and absolutely unique.

We have a big range of Elise's wines to share, but only small quantities of each. The '22 'Essentielle Rose' is a ridiculously fresh and fun young expression of Pinot and offers a snapshot of what she can achieve with some of her other cuvees. The '20 'Liberte Blanc de Noirs' is a single parcel of barrel-aged Pinot Noir bottled without dosage and less than 300 bottles made. The '16 'Blanc de Noirs' is 100% Pinot Noir that is vinified and matured in stainless steel tanks and bottled without dosage. The '15 'Affinite' is a blend of 70% Pinot and 30% Chardonnay vinified and matured in stainless steel and also bottled without dosage. The '19 'Couer de Noir Blanc de Noirs' is 100% Pinot from a single vineyard also vinified and matured in stainless steel. The '22 'Rose de Saignee' is the pressing of 100% Pinot that is aged in a combination of steel and oak and bottled without dosage. Finally, the '20 'Absolue Gres Blanc de Noirs' comes from a single parcel of 100% Pinot that is vinified and matured in sandstone amphora - truly unique and special. These are some truly unique wines that won't be around for much longer, especially not at these prices. Don't hesitate to stock up on these for Christmas!

Domaine de Trevallon

Domaine de Trévallon is situated in the village of Saint-Etienne-du-Grès, just a short distance from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, on the north side of the Alpilles. The old farmhouse of the estate in the countryside is surrounded by 13 hectares of dry limestone terrain, perfect for viticulture. In 1973 Eloi Dürrbach planted his first vineyard in the Alpilles - now 15 hectares are planted to red grapes; roughly equal amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, and about 2 hectares to white grapes, mainly Marsanne and Roussane.

Eloi was already told by his father at a young age that the estate would become a great place to make wine. Eloi listened to both his father and the chalk-white limestone soils of the estate and planted Cabernet Sauvignon which was a rarity outside of Bordeaux at the time. Here in Alpilles, Cabernet takes on more spicy notes of cinnamon and pepper with tannins that are mellowed out with late-harvest Syrah. The wines quickly became noticed by all the best sommeliers across France. In 1985, the AOC Les Baux-de-Provence was created, but in 1991 they altered the regulations so that Cabernet could not make up more than 20% of the blend. Instead of kneeling to the pressure of changing production so that he can put an AOC on his label, Eloi stuck to his guns, knowing that Cabernet was the king of his estate and declassified the wine to a 'Vin de Pays'. Eloi kept grinding at his craft and has garnered a cult-like following of fans around the world that flock to the opportunity to taste these distinctive wines. The elevation of the vineyard tempers the Provencal heat, and the cool climate helps create fresh, bright wines boasting high acidity and a floral streak, with Cabernet Sauvignon providing structure and firm texture.

We've just received our newest shipment of these mythical wines. We have a single bottle of their '23 'Blanc' - a rich blend of 44% Marsanne, 32% Roussanne, 16% Chardonnay and 8% Grenache Blanc. We have the 'Rouge' in '22 and '15 vintages as well as magnums of the '21 and '22 vintages. These are some exceptional and distinctive wines that should be sought out by anyone that loves unique wines full of character. Pick some of these up and have it with a nice piece of steak!
