New Italian Arrivals

We’ve had some fresh new Italian wines arrive in our store that we’ve been excited about; coming primarily from the lesser-known sub-regions of Piemonte.

Barolo and Barbaresco receive all the attention when it comes to Nebbiolo in Piemonte (for good reason) but there is a vast array of different expressions of this regal grape that come from different soil types, altitude and have different ageing requirements resulting in markedly different wines.

Colline Novaresi is an understated hilly region north of Novara with glacial and alluvial soils with altitude ranging from 180m-550m. The reds from this region tend to be much easier to drink in their youth than Barolo/Barbaresco.

The Nebbiolo of Gattinara is unique as it comes from volcanic soils on steep south-facing vineyards between 270m-400m above sea level. This is a region that all Nebbiolo fans should check out as even Conterno of Barolo has seen the potential and has been making wines here.

Many of you will already be familiar with the wines of Langhe as many Barolo/Barbaresco producers will also produce wines here made in a fresher, less-extracted style. Boca is a very rare appellation that would appeal to drinkers looking for similar alternatives to Barolo/Barbaresco.

From fresher, fruiter styles to more structured Barolo-slayers and even a sparkling wine, there is something in these new arrivals for everyone.

Momento Mori

Momento Mori is the project of New Zealander Dane Johns who spent time learning the ropes of Gippsland with legendary winemaker William Downie. Dane has been able to create some seriously unique and interesting wines in a hands-off style that has garnered a cult-like following for these wines - and they’re still affordable despite the hype.

“Momento Mori Wines, is founded on the principle of making wines that above all have respect for the living.”

Dane runs a small-scale winery with his wife Hannah in the region of Gippsland - a region known for producing some of the best wines in the country. All of their vineyards are strictly farmed organically and any grapes that they source from other growers they ensure are also grown with respect for sustainable and natural farming practices. Their wines are hand-made with small fermentations, wild yeasts, no oak and no winemaking additives. This results in wines that are unique, fresh, pure and most importantly, an absolute joy to drink.

We have three different Momento Mori wines in stock at the moment and have had to replenish some after quickly selling out. We have 2 of their orange wines: ‘23 ‘Fistful of Flowers’ and the ‘22 ‘Staring at the Sun’. The former is a blend of Moscato Giallo and Vermentino sourced from a Chalmers vineyard in Heathcote and sees 3 weeks of skin contact and smells exactly as the name suggests. The latter is a similar blend with the addition of Fiano and has mouth-watering acidity and freshness. These are some of Australia’s best orange wines. We also have the ‘22 ‘The Incline Syrah’ which includes 5% of Nosiola in the blend and drinks as a lighter, fresh and savoury Syrah - the opposite of a big Barossa Shiraz. These are some excellent and unique wines at a fantastic price, stock up on these before we sell through them again!
