We've had these in store for a couple months and they've been flying out the door so some of you may have already tasted these, but for those that want some warm winter reds that don't break the bank, this is the tasting for you. These are the wines we'll be pouring:

Gretchen Shiraz

We've taken a break from the expensive Burgs so that you can actually afford to walk out with the bottles that you enjoy this tasting. See you there!

Envinate

Envinate have firmly cemented themselves as the flagship producer of the Canary Islands, crafting sensational wines from volcanic terroir. This project started when 4 young students studying oenology in Alicante in 2005 decided to work together and explore the Atlantic influenced terroirs or western Spain, eventually buying some vineyards in 2008, primarily in Tenerife of the Canary Islands and the rest is history.

In the winery, concrete and/or old oak barrels are used for both fermentation and ageing and sulphur is used only at bottling in tiny proportions to keep the wines sharp and fresh. I had the pleasure of tasting these a couple of weeks ago and can vouch for these being incredibly unique, fresh and vibrant wines with a distinctive tasteful reductive hallmark. Envinate is an attempt to express a place and a time through wine. Any lovers of volcanic wines in general or anyone that hasn't had the chance to try anything from the Canary Islands should give these a try!

Radikon

Radikon, tucked away in the far northeast corner of Italy, right by the border with Slovenia, have set the standard that the world is chasing for orange/skin contact wines. Stanko Radikon revitalised his wines and started a worldwide movement by wanting to replicate the feeling he got from eating one of the grapes from his vines and looking back to the winemaking techniques of the period of his grandfather before him. Keeping the skins in contact with the grape juice of white wines was this key that unlocked the potential of his sites and has seen producers all around the world use similar techniques to replicate the success of Radikon.

Stanko's son - Sasa holds the reigns at the legendary estate now since his passing, although he continues to upkeep and develop the tradition laid before him by his father. In short, this entails organically grown grapes on the estate, long maceration periods with the skins for up to as long as a few months, long elevage in old oak as well as little to no sulphur use. The close-planted vineyard includes Ribolla Gialla (a grape that Radikon famously reinvigorated), Merlot, Tocai Friulano and Pinot Grigio. Yields are also extremely low so that the grapes show more concentration and site-specific personality. Radikon also advocate different bottle sizes, notably the normal bottle size from them is 500ml due to the belief that this is the perfect size for two people to share over dinner - a 500ml bottle each of white and red. It's also worth mentioning the longer neck shape too, which affects how the oxygen interacts with the wine and creating a different ageing curve for the better.

These are wines that excite, entrance and challenge preconceived notions of wine. They are textural and structured, can age for decades and display a unique blend of white and red wine characteristics. In short, these wines are bursting with personality and are always memorable - everything that we want from wine. We have a fantastic range of Radikon's dazzling wines across multiple cuvees and vintages to share. We have the 'Oslavje Bianco' in the '15, '17 and '18 vintages which spends 2/3 months on the skins, 3 years in barrel and 1-2 years in bottle. We also have the 'Ribolla Gialla Bianco' in both the '16 and '18 vintages which spends 2/3 months on the skins, 3 years in barrel and 1-2 years in bottle. Stepping up the ladder, we have the 'Ribolla Giallo Riserva 3781' in the '07 and '08 vintages, with both available in 1000ml bottles. Finishing up with some more alternative size bottles, we have: '21 'Sivi Bianco' in 1500ml, '20 'RS Rosso' in 1500ml and finally the '09 'Modri Pinot Noir' in 1000ml. These are some of the most exciting wines on the planet. Those that know, know; those that haven't had the privilege yet, now is your chance to understand why Radikon is such a cult figure and why producers all around the world try to replicate their style!
