New Spanish Arrivals
We've refreshed our increasingly popular Spanish section with some familiar names and some that are a little more off the beaten path. Spain has become known for being able to produce great wines at great prices and is home to many interesting indigenous varietals meaning that there is always something for everyone here.
The two Navascues Cutio wines below are absurd value for money; producing interesting wines from a region that is often associated with low quality mass-production. As soon as we tasted these the other week we knew on the spot that we would be buying them. Tasting the Muchada-Leclapart proved to us yet again that some of the most interesting stuff being done in the world of wine today is being made with unfortified Palomino from southern Spain. The Comando G is the so called "entry-level" offering from this cultish Garnacha producer that is doing some of the best work with the grape outside of Chateau Rayas. This is an excellent introduction to their silky, ethereal renditions of Garnacha. La Rioja Alta is, of course, an icon of the region of Rioja; making wines in that classic big and tastefully oaky style that Rioja is known for.
Spain continues to deliver at a range of prices in a range of styles. For those of you that know, pick up some of your favourites, for those that are still new to Spanish wines, start with some of these!

Iseya Distillery
Iseya Distillery is the artisanal project of Tatsuya Motonaga who founded it in 2021 in Lake Sagami Kanagawa. Tatsuya has previous work experience in some of the world’s greatest cocktails bars which included names such as Shibuya’s Coal Ila, Shinjuku’s BenFiddich and Taipei’s Wa-shu. A trip around Europe visiting over 70 distilleries inspired him to create his own Japanese Amaro brand after seeing what was possible with a high level of craftsmanship and local agriculture.
Tatsuya’s distillery is housed in a repurposed 100 year old traditional house, where each batch of Scarlet is handmade and hand bottled. A majority of the ingredients used in the production of Scarlet are sourced locally including a nearby field that is being used to grow botanicals specifically by Motonaga-san. These products are the essence of ‘handmade’ with every process done without machines - filtering, bottling, labelling, sealing. In addition, each Amaro is not heavily filtered with the aim to retain as much character of the raw ingredients as possible. Thus every bottle continues to have a heavy flavour-filled sediment that showcases these unique ingredients.
We’ve picked up a handful of these sensational Amari from this craft distiller. The ‘Scarlet Bitter Aperitivo’ is made with 25 types of botanicals, mainly orange peel, jasmine, wormwood, marjoram, and hops and has a nice bitter-sweetness. The ‘Scarlet Menta Amaro’ use more than 30 types of medicinal herbs such as sage, lemon balm, fennel, rhubarb, pine leaves, mulberry leaves, dandelion roots, rice bran, sorrel, and wormwood grown in their own fields along with a blend of 4 types of mint: peppermint, spearmint, apple mint and Hakka. The ‘Scarlet Verde Amaro’ is composed from more than 30 types of medicinal herbs such as sage, lemon balm, fennel, rhubarb, pine leaves, mulberry leaves, dandelion roots, rice bran, sorrel, and wormwood, all grown in their own fields. Finally, the ‘Scarlet Fernet Amaro’ is based on the popular herbal liqueur from northern Italy, contains a higher alcohol percentage and includes ingredients such as raspberry flowers, elderflower, Berberine, mint, Rooibos, Galangal, Ukogi, Suba, Chicori, Black letters, cinnamon and blood orange just to name a few. These are some seriously well-crafted and thoughtful Amari that has gained some well-deserved attention. Pick these up and see what all the hype is about!
