MEET THE MAKER
Thick as Thieves Tasting
Saturday 14th
3pm-6pm
Join us with the legendary winemaker from Yarra Valley's Thick as Thieves - Syd Bradford as he takes you through his fantastic wines.
Thick as Thieves started as a humble operation in 2009 with Syd buying grapes and renting facilities to make the wine. In 2012 he purchased the Cypress Ridge vineyard in Yarra Valley from which he has continued to produce compelling wines at great prices. These are the wines that Syd will be pouring:
'24 Arneis
'24 'Levings' Chardonnay (Lusatia Park)
'24 Gamay/Pinot
'24 'Plump' Pinot
'23 'Levings' Pinot
'23 Vicious Vino Rosso (Nebbiolo/Syrah)
These are some sensational wines that have become a staple of the store as we always sell out shortly after getting them in. Don't miss out on this chance to meet the man behind some of Yarra Valley's greatest wines!Orange Wine
'Tis the season for orange wines! Orange wines are often fresh, fruity and lively making them the perfect drink for summer and can pair with a range of foods.
Orange wines are simply wines made from white grapes (not oranges) that spend some time in contact with their skins, thus extracting more colour and tannin. The length of the maceration as well as other factors such as the grape variety itself and the ageing vessel can significantly impact the style of wine being made. These wines can range from lively, fruity and easy-drinking styles, through to wines with more grip, tannin and complexity. This method of winemaking actually goes back thousands of years to the ancient methods of Georgian winemaking so this is not just a trend!
We've selected some orange wines below that we believe represent excellent value at their respective price points and make for some fun summer drinking. Pick up some of these to drink by the pool, with a seafood lunch at Christmas or just whenever you feel like it.Ochota Barrels
Ochota Barrels is the resulting enterprise following Taras and Amber Ochota's surf trip along the west coast of Mexico in the late '00s, at which point they decided to make holistic wines back at home in South Australia. Taras played bass in a number of punk bands in his youth before graduating with a degree in oenology from Adelaide University, working at wineries around the world and finally settling with a nice steep slope in the Basket Range of Adelaide Hills.
Taras was understandably heavily influenced by the important people and characters that he met during his time working at wineries around the world, most of all from the small biodynamic producers he encountered in the south of France. Their approach of organic vineyards planted on soil with vitality, minimal intervention and picking decisions based on retaining natural acidity to produce wines with energy and tension are what resonated the most deeply with him. Ochota Barrels use low-yielding old vines with small berries, whole bunches when the stems are right, careful pigéage, as well as some skin contact and batonage to develop texture and complexity. They have also been experimenting with much lower sulphur levels based on the specific cuvee to produce pure wines that speak of their terroir.
