François Cotat
François Cotat produces some of the best white wines in France, without a doubt some of the best in Sancerre. The Cotat family has tended both Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir on the slopes of the Monts Damnés in Chavignol since the end of the second World War; it was only in the 1990s when two brothers, Paul and Francis, handed over the family domaine to their sons, François and Pascal, respectively. These two brothers formed their own domaines, Pascal (whose wines we also have in stock) is based in Sancerre proper while François is based in the village of Chavignol where he crafts some exceptional hands-off expressions of Sauvignon Blanc.
François has vines on La Grande Côte, the Cul de Beaujeu and the Mont Damnés on very steep clay-limestone slopes around Chavignol and also has a parcel of younger vines on the caillottes between Chavignol and Sancerre on lower, more gently sloping land. François' vine plantings are quite dense with 8,000 vines/hectrare compared to the 6,500 average for the region which helps to promote vine vigour, and consequently, lower yields and concentration in the grapes. He always picks his grapes at optimal ripeness, much more ripe than most other producers in the region which has come to be known as his signature style. François uses only natural yeasts, no debourbage, no sulphur during fermentation and only one battonage after the fermentation has finished. François only uses organic fertilisers and racks according to the phases of the moon.
We've got 4 new wines from François ready to share with you after already selling all of the 'Sancerre Caillottes'. The '23 'Sancerre Rose' is considered to be one of the best roses in the world made from Pinot Noir and is one of the rare examples of a rose that can/should be aged. We also have his 2 'Grand Cru' bottlings - the '23 'La Grande Cote' and '23 'Monts Damnés' which are considered the best sites for Sauvignon Blanc in the world. Both of these come from vines that are over 40 years old. Finally, we have a single bottle of the '17 'Cuvee Paul' which is named after his father and is incredibly rare - made from the 2 best barrels in the cellar only in a very good year and set aside as having the greatest potential for ageing. These are some of the most ageworthy and unique whites in the world with only a few to go round, don't hesitate to pick these up before it's too late!

Pieropan
Pieropan is a legendary family estate established by Leonildo who was the town doctor back in 1901 when he bought his first plot of land which make up part of their Calvarino vineyard today. Leonildo made important changes in the late '60s with a simple idea in mind that was revolutionary at the time - to enhance the individual vineyards and give the wines an identity based on the relationship between variety, soil, climate and human work. This led to the creation of two symbolic wines of Italian enology, "Calvarino" in 1971, the first Italian white single-vineyard and "La Rocca" in 1978. Today Pieropan is led by the fourth generation of family Andrea and Dario, both with degrees in agriculture and enology who carry on the family tradition with the same passion as their forefathers.
The strong link with the territory leads Pieropan to make important choices also for the agronomic management of the vineyard, eliminating chemical weeding in 2002 and starting to convert all production to organic in 2008. Pieropan's efforts to harness the relationship between variety, soil, climate and human work are best represented in their two top wines - basalt of volcanic origin in the Calvarino, limestone of marine origin in the Rocca. These two wines have come to be known as the benchmarks for which all Soave is judged. Also in the same vein as being an icon in the region, in 2008, Pieropan along with some others founded "FIVI" - the Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers.
We've just stocked up on more of Pieropan's wines that always sell out quickly in the store. We have the '23 'Soave Classico' in both 750ml and 350ml bottles. This is the wine that most people are familiar with made from a majority of Garganega with 10-15% Trebbiano as well from both volcanic and limestone soils across a range of altitudes and vines spanning 6-60 years old. This is the classic Italian white we all know and love - fresh, fruity and mineral. We also have the '23 of 'La Rocca' - a single-vineyard which is situated on the slopes of Monte Rocchetta, behind the Medieval Castle which dominates the town of Soave. The vineyard benefits from a special microclimate which makes it possible to obtain a wine with a great personality, and a unique and unrepeatable bouquet. Innovative since it’s first release in 1978, it has made its mark in the area, becoming an undisputed symbol of quality and tradition. This ages for 15 months in French oak tonneaux and some larger old Slavonian oak barrels. These are some classic wines from from one of Italy's best white wine regions - don't miss out!

Blind Corner Tasting
Saturday 17th
3pm-6pm
Join us this Saturday as we taste through the fun and exciting wines of Margaret River's Blind Corner.
Blind Corner started when Ben's parents bought a vineyard over 10 years ago and he moved there to help out along with his partner Naomi. They fell in love with the area and lifestyle and wanted to do things their way which led them to eventually buying a vineyard of their own.
Their vineyard is farmed and certified biodynamically - they've embraced native replanting, no-till soil practices, and crimped cover crops to lock in carbon and moisture. Kangaroos roam freely, saltbush thrives between the vines, and wild lavender grows by the dam. All of this work goes into the wines ad they still manage to be affordable! These are the wines we'll be pouring on Saturday:
Blind Corner Blanc 2024
Blind Corner Orange 2024
Blind Corner Rouge 2023
Come down to taste these fresh and tasty wines!
Wishing you a great week from the team: Chris, Pete and Aaron.
