Lamoresca
The agricultural farm of Lamoresca started out in 2000 with an olive farm of 46 ancient olive trees of the "Moresca" variety in the heart of Sicily in the small town of San Michele di Ganzaria. Located at an altitude of 430m above sea level, Lamoresca now have 25 hectares dedicated to vines, olives, prickly pears and an assortment of other fruits. Everything is organically cultivated and their fields are surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and wild herbs, where all types of animals; even porcupines, and insects can be found in their traditional habitat, creating very important biodiversity.
Respect for the soil, plants, and their phenological phases is an absolute priority for their farm which is why they devote most of their time to work in the vineyards.
"The mission of obtaining a healthy and high-quality fruit is achieved through precise and accurate interventions in all seasonal phases."
All grapes (and olives, for that matter) are harvested manually by hand once achieving an optimal level of ripeness while cover crops are used for the nitrogen-fixing and the increasing of the organic matter of the soil. All of this organic work in the vineyard allows for the grapes to be processed immediately upon arrival in the cellar as they are arriving in perfect condition after a year of hard work so there is no need for heavy-handed cellar trickery.
We've just picked up 3 great red wines from Lamoresca in time for winter. The '23 'Vino Rosso' is a blend of Nero d'Avola, Frappato and Grenache and aged for 12 months in oak truncated cone barrels. This wine is fresh and ethereal. The '22 'Nero Nero d'Avola' is 100% Nero d'Avola grown at 550 metres above sea level from a 20 year old vineyard from which only 1500 bottles were made. Finally, the '23 'Elsa' is a blend of the best grapes of Nerello Mascalese 60%, Frappato 20% and Nero d’Avola 20% with 3 weeks maceration, 1 year in concrete tanks and only 2000 bottles produced. We've managed to get this down in price as we sold the previous vintage for $91 and this is now $82 on the shelf. These are some exceptional wines from one of Sicily's most exciting producers - pick some of these up for winter!

Between Five Bells
Between Five Bells is the project of Ray Nadeson of Lethbridge in Geelong that allows him to be as creative as possible and experiment with a range of winemaking techniques. The project takes its name from the last three words in the first stanza of Kenneth Slessor’s famous poem, Five Bells. The aim for the wines is to be multi-regional, multi-varietal blends with the ultimate goal of being delicious and slurpable wines.
Unlike the Lethbridge wines, with Between Five Bells the winemaker supercedes the terroir with the drinker able to experience the wines for what they are without having to think too much about the region or grape varieties involved. That being said, all the grape varieties and their respective percentages are all neatly outlined on the labels so you know exactly what you are drinking if you want to know and to prove that Ray is not hiding anything with his winemaking artifice. This freedom allows Ray to explore texture, fermentation vessels and blending. Despite the experimentation, these are all clean wines that represent incredibly good value for money. Ray likes to use musical analogies for his wines and these he compares to discordant jazz; so if you are a fan of Coltrane's later albums, these are the wines for you.
We've just stocked up on 5 of these excellent wines that always sell well. We have the '21 'Pet-Nat' which is full of citrus, stone fruit and tasteful fizz. There's also the '22 'White' which is an incredibly tasty and fresh blend of predominantly Italian varietals. The '21 'Amber' is one of the best value orange wines in the country, with Pinot Gris making up the largest portion of the blend and ages in French oak and clay amphora with 90 days on skins post-fermentation. The '21 'Pinot Wine' involves mainly whole bunch Pinot Noir but also Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris and undergoes carbonic maceration to create a silky and ethereal wine. Finally, the '21 'Red' has a Sagrantino backbone with some Syrah and Vermentino for aromatic lift to the darker, savoury Sagrantino. Everything Ray makes is so painfully good that it's almost kind of annoying. Pick up some of these killer fun wines and try them for yourself!
