Yarra Yering
A range of new wines from the legendary Yarra Yering have just hit our shelves! For those of you unfamiliar with this esteemed estate, Yarra Yering have been one of the most respected producers not just in Yarra Valley, but in Australia with large international acclaim. Sarah Crowe has been leading the reigns as the Winemaker and General Manager for over a decade now and has been picking up award after award and crafting some of the best wines this country has ever seen.
A range of wines from the top-tier “Carrodus” line have been allocated to us which include the Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet and Shiraz. The Carrodus range was named after the founder: Dr. B.B. Carrodus and aims to honour his legacy with extremely limited bottlings of specific high-quality plots within the vineyards.
New arrivals of the fan-favourite Dry Red N.1 (Bordeaux blend) and N.2 (Rhone blend) just landed as well. These are serious wines that represent some of the best expressions in the country of Cabernet-based and Shiraz-based wines, respectively. I don’t have room in this email to list all the awards and high scores these wines have received but it goes without saying that these wines will sell out fast so be sure to get in quick. - Aaron C.

Traviarti

We are proud to be stocking the final ever vintage from Traviarti of Beechworth with the 2023 vintage. With the winemaker Simon Grant packing up the bags and moving down to Tasmania, the 2023 vintage in Beechworth will wrap up the short but sweet Traviarti project.

Traviarti’s Nebbiolo is considered by many to be the best in the country. If any of you have been unimpressed by the Nebbiolo produced in Australia for not being able to scratch that itch that only the complex tannic Nebbiolo of Langhe can, then we may have the answer for you with these superb wines.

The 2023 Black Springs Nebbiolo is a single-vineyard expression that produces an incredible fruit profile from younger vines. This will be the last vintage ever made. The classic Traviarti Nebbiolo uses older vines from estate-grown grapes that produce a wine with a complex flavour profile with fruit, floral and savoury notes and tannin which lends excellent structure and cellaring-potential to this wine. We currently have the ‘22 in stock and the final ‘23 vintage will arrive later this year.

We can’t forget the final ever vintages of the Chardonnay and Rosso. The ‘23 Chardonnay is a classic Beechworth Chardonnay with power, texture and ample acidity with a crisp citrus and stone fruit profile. The ’23 Rosso is a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera made for earlier drinking and shows a spectrum of red fruits and herbs. This is a great option for those of you that may want to put the Nebbiolo down in the cellar for some time first.

Celebrate the final vintage from Traviarti with us and pick up your share before it’s too late. - Aaron C.

Sailor Seeks Horse

Huon Valley - Tasmania

New Release Tasting

Saturday 27th of April

3-6PM

“Any tips for setting out on your own and planting a vineyard?”
“Yes, don’t do it”

This was part of a conversation between Paul and Gilli Lipscombe, and respected UK wine writer Robert
Joseph in 2005. Did they listen? Not a chance.

I recently spent 2 weeks in Tasmania with the good folks at Sailor Seeks Horse. I learnt a lot, worked a
little, but most of all I got to spend time with two incredible people for their 2024 harvest – Paul and
Gilli Lipscombe. They’re happy people, good people, with complimentary personalities and deeply in
love. The life they’ve built in this corner of the globe is something only dreams are made of. Producing
exceptional wines must be a consolation.

Paul and Gilli Lipscombe weren’t born into the wine, they grew into it, together. In a previous life they
worked the 9 to 5 grind, in what Paul calls “marketing”. Encouraged by each other and their love for
good wine, they begun a new frontier to becoming vignerons. They completed several vintages in the
Languedoc and Oregon before moving to Margaret River where they studied and worked in pursuit of
their winemaking and viticultural dreams. Before long, they had their sights set on owning and operating
their own vineyard. Enter the Huon Valley and the beginnings of Sailor Seeks Horse.

Paul and Gilli moved to the Huon Valley (~45 minutes south-west of Hobart) in 2010. Their dream… “to
produce Australia’s best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay”. Their belief… that “great Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay are produced on the edge of viticultural possibility”. In honour of their dreams and beliefs,
they purchased a dilapidated 6.5-hectare vineyard that sits precariously on the southern edge of the
world, aka, the edge of viticultural possibility.

The Sailor Seeks Horse vineyard is located in the southern-most and coolest (coldest) viticultural region
in Australia. South-east facing, it’s planted on Permian mudstone, which is both rocky and sandy,
meaning it’s a lean and low nutrient site, growing small canopies and mind-blowingly low-yields. The
bright side of this, you ask? The exceptional quality of fruit this vineyard produces. Tiny, flavourful,
structured bunches, ripe for crafting a great wine.

In the vineyard, Paul and Gilli have a seemingly endless amount of energy to progress their site. They
have a thirst for new, well-researched and logical knowledge with a biological benefit to the vineyard,
the environment and the community. They continue to learn from, and of, their vineyard through
assessment, implementation and observation of all viticultural endeavors. All attributes of great
vignerons around the world.

In the winery, Paul and Gilli have a minimal intervention. They produce fine, elegant, perfumed and
savoury expressions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Pinot Noir’s are hand-picked and almost always
totally destemmed into small vessels for fermentation. They are plunged twice daily for a gentle
extraction of tannins and pressed once the structural elements of the fruit have syncronised within the
wine. They are aged for 12 months in a mix of new and old French oak followed by a further few months in tank before bottling. The Chardonnay’s are hand-picked and direct-pressed to a combination of new
and old French oak barrels. They ferment and age on full-solids and lees for 12 months before further
ageing in tank before bottling. Like all good vignerons, the winemaking is simple and the vineyard is
allowed to shine.

We recently received our allocation of the 2022 Sailor Seeks Horse wines from Paul and Gilli. They are
available now, in-store or online. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do. – Chris L
