Collection: Orange - Heavily textured

What is an orange wine? A wine is orange, or amber, when the white grapes are kept in contact with their skins for an extended period of time. Basically, it's a white grape being made like a red wine. The colour of the resulting wine, orange, comes from the skins of the grape variety. This colour can differ from yellow to orange to amber and even purple depending on the variety.

Our Heavily textured collection of orange wines represents those that spend a long period of time macerating on their skins and in turn extracting a lot of texture, flavour and colour in the process. These are commonly orange to dark orange in colour, but should never be brown.

Georgia, in the Middle East, has been making amber wines for centuries in clay vessels called Kvevri. They are intense, dense and tannic expressions of their native varieties: Rkatsiteli, Chinuri, Khikhvi to name a few. The producer Pheasant's Tears is a good example.

In more recent times Friuli in Italy and Brda in Slovenia have brought orange wines to the forefront of the wine scene. Producers like Gravner, Dario Princic, Radikon and Simcic have each created their own unique styles from local varieties such as Ribolla Gialla, Friulano and Pinot Grigio.
