Mouthfilling wines with mid-palate richness; lingering plummy fruits: a versatile food wine.
BACKGROUND: Original Estate vineyard; 8,500 vines/HA; specific plot cropping at approx. one tonne/acre, often blended with the best fruit from our Leongatha Vineyard. Wine with attractive, rich fruits in the mid-palate, with the strength to improve up to ten years in the cellar.
The 2015 vintage has delivered red wines with varietal purity, fresh natural acidity, tangy minerality and overall balance: one of our best vintages. These are great wines from Bass Phillip, and they are all capable of mediumlong-term cellaring....... However, they are beautiful to drink now!! All the reds need one hour breathing after pulling the cork.
WINEMAKER'S COMMENTS: A complex mouthful of intense flavours. Balanced acidity carries through to the finish. Emphasis is in the middle plate: But with quite powerful tannins. This is a good food wine : a very easy drink.
INDUSTRY EXPERT: The first impression on the nose is of freshly cut violets with hints of strawberry, sour cherry, plum and a little forest floor. It is particularly spicy with nutmeg and cinnamon coming into play. At this stage of its life this wine is restrained but has an elegant and very sophisticated palate profile supported by quite delicious fresh pinot flavour. On the early part of a journey that will last at least ten years the rich core of fruit ensures that this wine will be a winner with gamey meat dishes.
CRITIC'S REVIEW: "Spice, red fruits, rose petal and vanilla, a bit of animal fur and earth, perhaps. Medium bodied at most, sappy and animated, redcurrant and pomegranate, fine burr of kitten's tongue tannin, pleasing sense of delicacy, and pretty fine length. Delicious." (Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, May 2017. Score: 94+/100)
Bass Phillip is named after George Bass and Arthur Phillip ‚– men of great pioneering spirit, foresight and leadership during the nineteenth century. Phillip Jones first established the Bass Phillip vineyards, many years later, in the southeastern corner of Australia in 1979, specialising in high-quality pinot noir and chardonnay wines.
Winemaking at Bass Phillip is uncompromising and driven by the respect for nature. The vineyards are organic since 1993 and biodynamic since 2002. All wine production process at Bass Phillip is guided by the cosmic rhythms that impart energy and vibrancy into the wines.
Made in a simple and traditional manner, with low-cropped vineyards, no irrigation and minimal intervention in the winery, the wines of Bass Phillip display flavours which are characteristic of the region and their individual vineyards. Deep mineral-rich soils, natural high humidity, and cooler temperatures in South Gippsland is also part of the magic that delivers the length, complexity, flavors, balanced acidity, and natural minerality to Bass Phillip wines. Combined with Phillip Jones's undivided attention to detail in the vineyards and winery, and an insatiable passion for quality wine experiences, Bass Phillip produces extraordinary wines one vintage after another.
