Tasting Notes
The vineyard name, Les Longeroies, probably comes from the French verb longer which means ‘to border’. This makes sense as Longeroies is on the boundary between Marsannay and the next village of Chenôve. It is a star climat of the AOC and has been earmarked for promotion to 1er Cru (when Marsannay finally gets some!) Longeroies faces south, and the two Mortet parcels sit mid-slope. One is 50 years old, and the other was planted with Pinot Fin clones in 1992. - Importer Note
Domaine Denis Mortet has been considered one of the great growers of the Côte de Nuits for close to 25 years ‚– basically since La Revue du vin de France named Denis Mortet the best wine grower in France in 1995. Outstanding holdings, the legendary standard of vineyard work and the quality, consistency and longevity of the Domaine's wines have well-justified this reputation. And yet, even with such an illustrious history, this is a producer that continues to make significant strides forward, the wines gaining in quality and breed with every visit. Mortet somehow manages to be an established icon while radiating the aura of a new star. You visit each year with extremely high expectations, and yet these expectations are always surpassed by the quality and class on offer. I have often wondered how this is possible. One of the keys is the still-young and talented Arnaud Mortet, who took over the Domaine from his famous father only a decade ago and has subsequently driven it to new heights, continuously looking for areas that he can improve the wines even further. A new, more practical cellar full of concrete fermenters, less new oak for ageing, more whole bunches in the fermenters (when Arnaud considers it makes sense) and this young man's growing experience and confidence have led to ever finer wines being produced here ‚– wines of far greater finesse and balance. It should be no surprise that such a great Domaine has released a tremendous set of wines from an outstanding red vintage like 2015. And yet, no matter how high our expectations were, we walked away shaking our head in awe and wonder. We trust you will do the same. - Importer Note
