Tasting Notes

From very old vines situated mostly in Brochon, and Trapet notes that a high percentage are more than 90 years of age.

The Gevrey-Chambertin "Ostrea" has a more complex bouquet than the regular Gevrey Village cru, leaning a little more to the red side of the fruit spectrum than the black, with chalk and limestone scents emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, a fresh line of acidity, quite pure in the mouth with a silky smooth finish that lingers. I love the mineralité here. Neil Martin, robertparker.com.

Domaine Trapet Père et Fils is one of the great estates of Gevrey-Chambertin, with superb holdings in three of the top grand crus in the village. While the family has been important vineyard owners in Gevrey-Chambertin since 1870, it was not until the 1960s that they began to bottle a majority of their production. By the late 1920s, Domaine Trapet had become one of the most important vineyard owners in all of Burgundy, as they were the single largest owner in the great vineyard of Chambertin as well as owning very large parcels of Latricières-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin. They were considered one of the finest sources for top négociants in the region, including Maison Leroy and Maison Joseph Drouhin.

Like many of the top winemakers in his generation, Jean-Louis has adopted the principles of biodynamique agriculture since 1998 in an attempt to restore the health and vitality of the soil in these ancient and respected parcels. Harvesting is done manually and the grapes are sorted twice, once in the field and once at the sorting tables, to eliminate unripe or rotten fruit. The Domaine has been certified by Biodyvin since 1998 and Demeter from 2005.

While the estate is best known for its three great grand crus, the quality at Domaine Trapet Père et Fils is across all their vineyard holdings. Their Bourgogne rouge is one of the best in Burgundy. The Domaine also makes an outstanding example of Gevrey Chambertin Villages, and an impressive lineup of premier crus - the domaine also owns parcels in three top premier crus: Clos Prieur, Les Corbeaux and Petite Chapelle.
