Tasting Notes
From Aleks Klinec’s organically farmed vineyards in Medana, this skin-fermented Friulano (labelled as Jakot, “Tokaj” spelled backwards) is a striking expression of Brda’s mineral-rich marl soils. The nose is complex and inviting, with notes of quince, dried apricot, citrus peel and wild herbs, layered over a subtle nutty and floral edge. On the palate it is textured and powerful, yet finely balanced, with savoury grip from extended skin contact offset by vibrant acidity and a long, saline finish. A wine of real depth and personality—equally compelling at the table as it is contemplative on its own. - Chris L
Klinec is a multi-generational family winery in the heart of Medana, Goriška Brda (Slovenian Collio), owned today by Aleks Klinec, who represents the fourth generation of winemakers. The estate—about 6–7 hectares of terraced vineyards planted on mineral-rich “ponka” soils of sandstone and marl—has been farmed organically and biodynamically, supporting a living ecosystem that includes free-range animals, composting, and minimal vineyard disturbance.
Aleks is a pioneer of Slovenia’s natural wine movement, crafting expressive skin-contact whites and thoughtfully restrained reds. Fermentations are spontaneous, macerations are extended, and aging happens in acacia, mulberry, cherry, oak (and sometimes concrete), often over multiple years. The wines emerge unfiltered, with minimal sulfur and deep layers of saline minerality, texture, and soulful personality.
Klinec’s wines stand out for their raw energy, clarity of terroir, and a certain “living” presence—wines that vividly embody place, tradition, and a resolute creative vision.
